The 2023 U.S. Surgeon General's Advisory
In May 2023, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy released a landmark Advisory framing loneliness as a defining public health crisis of our time. This page walks through the report in the order he wrote it — what he says is happening, why, and what he prescribes to fix it.
Kenektic exists because the Surgeon General is right — and because the prescription includes building digital environments that bring people together instead of pulling them apart.
“Social connection is as essential to our long-term survival as food and water.”
— Vivek Murthy, U.S. Surgeon General
Section 01
Murthy's position is direct: loneliness is not a personal failing or a private feeling. It is a structural condition that has been worsening for decades, and the country has been treating it as background noise. The Advisory is his attempt to put it back on the national agenda — alongside the public health crises the country has organized itself to fight before.
The Report's Position
Social connection is a fundamental human need, on par with food, water, and shelter.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic takes the Advisory at face value. We treat friendship as a measurable health outcome — not a feature, not a side effect of a social app — and we're building the product the Surgeon General said the industry was missing.
Section 02
Loneliness is the subjective feeling of being disconnected, regardless of how many people are around you.
How Kenektic improves it: kAI is the daily companion that meets the feeling head-on — someone who actually knows you, listens without judgment, and is there at 3am — while always pointing you back toward real people, never replacing them.
Social isolation is the objective lack of social contacts and roles.
How Kenektic improves it: kAI closes the structural gap directly — learning who you are through natural conversation, then introducing you to compatible people with enough shared context that the conversation actually starts. “I don’t know how to meet people” stops being a problem you have to solve alone.
Social connection is the positive frame, with three dimensions: structure (the size and variety of your network), function (the support you give and receive), and quality (whether interactions are positive or harmful).
How Kenektic improves it: Kenektic is built for the quality dimension, not the volume one. Every match has to clear two separate bars — fit (shared interests, communication style, values, and life stage) and viability (whether the friendship can actually happen and last) — so one strong area can't carry a weak one, and the connections that form are real, not noisy.
The Report's Position
You can’t fix this problem if you treat all three as the same thing. A person can be socially active and still lonely. A person can live alone and still be deeply connected.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic targets all three dimensions in parallel: kAI meets the felt loneliness, our introduction engine closes the objective isolation gap, and our matching is scored on quality — the dimension that actually predicts whether a connection lasts.
Section 03
The Report's Position
This is a long-running trend, not a pandemic blip. COVID accelerated something that was already breaking.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic is built for the demographic the trend lines describe — adults from their 20s through their 70s who've lost the default infrastructure of school, neighborhood, and civic life. We meet people where they already are: on their phones, with no map for how to make friends as an adult.
Section 04
The Report's Position
The biological mechanisms are real and measurable. This is not a metaphor.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic doesn't make medical claims, but every friendship we help form is a small input to the same biological systems the Advisory describes. Mortality, dementia, and cardiovascular risk all bend with social contact — that's the dose-dependent effect we're designed to add to, one introduction at a time.
Section 05
The Report's Position
The mental health crisis and the loneliness crisis are the same crisis, viewed from different angles.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
kAI is designed to be the first listener — available 24/7, without judgment — but always pointed back at real people. We refuse to let kAI become a substitute for human contact, because the Advisory is explicit that humans are the active ingredient. The AI is the bridge, not the destination.
Section 06
The Report's Position
This is not just about individuals feeling bad. Disconnected communities are less safe, less productive, and less able to recover from shocks.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic ships into the institutions absorbing the cost — universities fighting student attrition, employers losing $154B a year to absenteeism, and health plans paying $6.7B in Medicare spend tied to isolation. We connect the people inside those institutions, and give the institution itself a way to measure the return.
Section 07
The Report's Position
Technology is double-edged. It is part of the cause — and any serious solution has to be part technological.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic is built as the counter-design to feed-driven social media. No infinite scroll, no comparison, no rage-bait, no attention monetization. The product is a small number of high-quality introductions and a graceful handoff to in-person meeting — technology used to push people toward each other, not pull them apart.
Section 08
The Report's Position
No single actor solves this. Government, healthcare, technology companies, employers, families, and individuals all carry part of the work.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic answers Pillar 4 (Reform Digital Environments) directly — a platform that optimizes for friendships formed, not time-on-app — and contributes to Pillar 6 (Build a Culture of Connection) by making it cheap, ordinary, and unembarrassing to meet new people as an adult. The Surgeon General named the problem; we're building the part of the solution our industry was asked to bring.
Section 09
Murthy closes by asking individuals, families, schools, employers, healthcare systems, governments, and technology companies each to carry a piece of the work. For individuals, the report sets a concrete floor:
The closing argument: the country has rebuilt itself around connection before, and can do it again.
The Report's Position
This is a solvable problem if the country chooses to treat it like one.
How Kenektic Is Impacting This
Kenektic is built around the Advisory's own floor. kAI helps you take that 15 minutes seriously — reminding you to reach out, drafting the message you've been putting off, suggesting who has gone quiet. The point of the AI is never to absorb the 15 minutes itself. The point is to make sure you spend them on a human.
